A bathroom is defined by moisture that never fully leaves, and that single fact reorganises the advice. Mould is not a cleaning failure here but a humidity condition: the federal guidance's own bathroom note says that often-damp places are hard to keep free of mould, and that where it keeps reappearing in a shower, INCREASING VENTILATION and cleaning more frequently will usually prevent recurrence or keep it to a minimum. Cleaning without changing the ventilation buys weeks. The second feature is material density. A shower enclosure typically puts architectural glass, porcelain tile, cementitious grout, a plated tap finish, silicone sealant and acrylic within a metre of each other, and the acid that lifts limescale from the glass attacks the grout, while the abrasive that would clear the acrylic dulls it permanently. There is no single bathroom product for that reason. The third is a hardware rule that travels badly: the trade guidance for window and door hardware — dry duster, no water — applies to plated and coated fittings generally, and a tap finish soaked in an acidic descaler is the commonest way a bathroom is damaged by cleaning it.

  • Mould A living growth, not a stain. Killing it and removing the staining are two separate jobs, and neither addresses the moisture that caused it.
  • Limescale A hard, chalky calcium carbonate deposit left by hard water. Dissolved by acids, essentially untouched by detergents.
