Why CleaningHQ refuses to answer some questions, what its safety states mean, and why an absence of a warning here is never an all-clear.

Unknown does not mean safe

This is the single idea the whole product is built around. If CleaningHQ has no record that a combination is dangerous, that is not a clearance. It means nobody has established what happens.

It matters because of what a growing catalogue would otherwise do. If “no record exists” and “checked and compatible” were the same value, then every gap would silently read as an all-clear — and the product would get more dangerous as it grew, because it would have more gaps.

The states, and what each one licenses

Safe in the conditions described
An authoritative source somebody has read supports it, within limits the page states. Note there is no plain 'safe' — a clearance without conditions is not a claim anybody can support about a chemical process.
Safe only in specific conditions
Safe inside explicit limits — a dilution, a contact time, a test patch. Outside those limits CleaningHQ makes no claim at all.
Depends on the manufacturer
The answer genuinely varies by product, finish or model. This is a real answer, not an evasion: read the manual.
Not established
No adequate evidence either way. Terminal. It renders as 'we do not know', never as a cautious yes.
Best avoided
Guidance advises against it, short of established harm.
Unsafe
Established harm — to the item, or to you.

Why we will not infer compatibility

It would be easy to build a system that reasons its way to an answer for any pair — this agent is acidic, that material is a silicate, therefore probably fine. CleaningHQ deliberately does not, and the reason is that composing facts can compose them into a conclusion none of the sources support.

Real surfaces are not their mineral. A granite worktop carries an impregnating treatment with its own chemistry. A stove door may have screen-printed decoration that an abrasive harmless to the glass will destroy. An aluminium tray and a steel tray look identical and behave completely differently. Every one of those is invisible to a chemical inference and obvious to a source that addressed the actual object.

Mixing: two outcomes, no third

Asked whether two products can be combined, CleaningHQ returns either a recorded hazard or a refusal. There is deliberately no record type that says two things are safe to mix, and none may be added — that claim covers an open-ended space of concentrations, quantities, temperatures and whatever is already on the surface, and it is not one this product can make for a domestic reader.

CleaningHQ has no record of this specific combination. That is not a safety clearance — it means we have not established what happens, and we will not guess. As a general rule, do not mix cleaning products: use one, rinse thoroughly, then use the other if you need to.

What we will not publish

When the cure would destroy the patient

Sometimes the treatment that removes the problem is the treatment that ruins the surface it is on, and nobody disagrees about any of it. Limescale is calcium carbonate and dissolves in acid; marble is calcium carbonate and dissolves in acid. There is no clever chemical answer, because the reaction cannot tell them apart.

These get their own records rather than a warning, because the useful answer is usually a different kindof approach — mechanical rather than chemical, preventive rather than remedial, or a specialist rather than a bottle. There are 16 recorded. When the obvious answer is wrong.

What CleaningHQ is not

It explains; it does not supervise. It is not a substitute for a manufacturer’s instructions, for a professional where one is warranted, or for medical advice. If anyone has been exposed to fumes or a chemical and is unwell, that is an emergency and belongs with emergency services rather than with a website.
