What this setting actually gets
- Grease — Fats and oils, which water alone cannot lift. Removed by surfactants, by heat, by solvents, or by alkalis that convert the fat into soap.
What suits it here
Recorded as appropriate to this setting rather than cleared on a material. Suitability in a place and safety on a surface are separate questions, and both have to pass before anything is recommended.
Two-stage degreasing
A solvent pass followed by a detergent pass. Each finishes what the other cannot, and the trade documentation says so in one sentence.
Neutral cleaning
The default that four separate trades converge on independently: a neutral detergent, warm water, a soft tool and a thorough rinse.
Two-stage disinfection
Clean first, disinfect second, and leave it wet for the time on the label. Almost every household version of this skips one of the three, and each omission stops it working.
Cellulose sponge
The most-handled cleaning tool in a kitchen and the one that holds the most moisture and food. Cleaning it is possible; the evidence stops short of eliminating what is in it.
What to keep out of it
- Oven cleaner — Not a blanket prohibition — a caution about reach. Caustic oven cleaner in a kitchen is within splashing distance of aluminium extractor mesh, engineered quartz and an enamelled hob, each of which this catalogue records it as damaging.

Windows open during and after, and doors shut so spores are not carried to other rooms. Mask, gloves and goggles, washed or safely discarded afterwards.
Why this setting is different
- Organic load — A disinfectant applied to a dirty surface is spent on the dirt. This is why every professional protocol cleans first and disinfects second, in that order.
- Cleaning, disinfecting and sterilising — Three different things routinely sold as one. Cleaning removes soil, disinfecting kills micro-organisms, and each is largely ineffective without the other.
- Contact time — The variable people ignore and the one that most often decides the outcome — in both directions. Longer works better, and longer is also how damage happens.
