In detail
A single agent rarely finishes a greasy, gritty deposit, because such a deposit is two things at once. A solvent dissolves the oil but leaves the particulate it was holding, now loose and smeared. A detergent carries away particulate and lighter soil but works slowly on a heavy oil film. Applied in sequence they complete each other, and the bicycle trade documentation states it directly: using two different types of solvents, a degreaser and a soap, is very effective at cleaning the chain and removing grit. The order matters and it is solvent first, because a wetted surface resists the solvent while a degreased one is readily wetted by the detergent. The pattern generalises well beyond a drivetrain. It is the carpet trade's sequence for every greasy entry — a dry-cleaning solvent, then a detergent solution, then warm water. It is what the leather institute does for an oil mark on suede, using an absorbent powder first and mineral spirits only afterwards. And it is the workshop approach to any oily component. Two cautions carry through: the solvent must not reach anything it dissolves or any bearing it can drain into, and the detergent stage needs its own rinse.
