Hacks & claims
Popular, traditional and trade cleaning techniques, treated as claims to investigate rather than tips to repeat. Some of them work, some do not, and a few work but ruin the surface they are most often recommended for.
A technique can be useful without a randomised trial behind it. Trade knowledge built over generations is real evidence of a real kind, and we record it as what it is rather than dismissing it or inflating it.
Ash and water on stove glass
Supported
The traditional method for clearing soot from a stove door. The UK approval body and at least one manufacturer both recommend it directly.
Aluminium foil for surface rust on chrome
Established practitioner practice
Crumpled foil, wetted, rubbed over rust spots on chrome. Widely reported to work — and the popular explanation of why is not established.
Oxygen bleach is the wool-safe bleach
Does not work
Widely believed, encouraged by colour-safe marketing, and contradicted by the wool industry body — which advises against oxygen bleach as firmly as chlorine.
Sealing stone makes it stain-proof
Does not work
The stone trade's own guidance is unusually blunt about this: a sealer is a repellent, not a seal, and sealing does not make stone stain-proof.
Natural cleaning products are safer
Does not work
Natural describes where something came from and predicts nothing about what it does. The UK regulator lists this belief among the myths it exists to correct.
Mixing vinegar and bicarbonate of soda
Does not work
The most popular cleaning combination on the internet, and the two ingredients largely cancel each other out. Both are useful — separately.
Steel wool for stubborn marks on stainless steel
Does not work
It works in the moment and creates the next problem. The embedded carbon steel particles it leaves behind are what later look like the stainless steel rusting.
Leaving bleach in the sink overnight
Does not work
Named and advised against by the stainless steel trade association, and it is also how two of the documented chlorine gas exposures began.
Spraying hydrogen peroxide and vinegar in sequence
Does not work
Circulated as a two-step method precisely because neither ingredient seems like anything to worry about. Together they form peracetic acid, which irritates eyes, skin and lungs.
Following bleach with an alcohol sanitiser
Does not work
Doing both to be thorough is the reasoning, and the two react. Hypochlorite with alcohols forms chloroform.
Vinegar as an all-purpose cleaner
Disputed
Genuinely excellent at one job and promoted into a universal one. The surfaces it is most often recommended for online include several it permanently damages.
Granite is acid-proof, so vinegar is fine on it
Disputed
The stone genuinely resists kitchen acids. The worktop is not only the stone, and the trade still does not recommend acidic cleaners on it.
Hotter washes clean better
Disputed
True of the chemistry and false as advice. Temperature is one of four variables, and it is the one most fabrics constrain hardest.
Newspaper for cleaning glass
Established practitioner practice
Long-established, and the one authoritative source CleaningHQ found for it is about stove glass rather than windows.
Drying a surface prevents water marks
Supported
The least glamorous claim in this file and one of the best evidenced. The mark forms at the moment of evaporation, so drying is where it is prevented.
Denture cleaning tablets for descaling
Unresolved
Investigated during Sprint 2 and left open. The ingredients make it plausible; CleaningHQ found no authoritative source and no manufacturer permitting it.
Using a dishwasher tablet outside the dishwasher
Unresolved
Investigated and left open on effectiveness. On the safety side there is one thing CleaningHQ can say, and it is not reassuring.
Cola for removing rust

The active ingredient is real and the concentration is the problem. Investigated and left unresolved, with a better-evidenced alternative available.
Steam cleaning sanitises without chemicals

Investigated and left unresolved. Heat does kill micro-organisms; whether a passing jet of steam achieves it on a domestic surface is the part nobody CleaningHQ read has established.
Bicarbonate of soda absorbs odours
Plausible mechanism, untested in this application
Partly right for a specific chemical reason, and applied far beyond it. It neutralises acidic odours; the ones it is most often deployed against are not acidic.
Never use soap on cast iron
Does not work
Among the most confidently held rules in domestic cooking, and the manufacturer contradicts it outright. The prohibition outlived the soap it was formed around.
Using a limescale remover on shower grout
Does not work
It removes the scale and dissolves the grout. Cement is alkaline, and the tile trade says acids attack it — which is what most bathroom products are.
Fine steel wool for hard-water marks on stone
Supported
Steel wool is refuted on stainless steel and recommended on stone. Same material, opposite verdicts, and the reason is the whole of what CleaningHQ is for.
Dry-clean-only labels are just the manufacturer being cautious
Does not work
The body that devised the care-labelling system states the symbols mean the maximum severity the garment can take without irreversible damage. That is a specification, not caution.
Steam mops are safe on sealed wood floors
Does not work
Steam mops are marketed for wood floors and sold in the flooring aisle. The wood flooring trade association rules them out entirely.
Scrub a carpet stain to get it out
Does not work
The instinctive response to a spill, and the one the carpet trade association specifically prohibits. Scrubbing damages the carpet itself.
Mould needs bleach
Does not work
The environmental regulator does not recommend biocides as routine, directs detergent and water, and says the part everyone misses: killing mould is not enough, because it must also be removed.
Using a stone cleaner on a quartz worktop
Does not work
It looks like stone, it is sold as stone, and the manufacturer explicitly tells you not to use the products made for stone on it.
Oven cleaner for a stubborn worktop mark
Does not work
Reaching for the strongest thing in the cupboard when a mark will not shift. On engineered quartz the manufacturer prohibits it outright.
Hot water for a blood stain
Does not work
The instinct is that hot water cleans better. On this one stain it is precisely the wrong move, and it is not recoverable.
A stronger solution cleans better
Does not work
The trade body that publishes carpet stain procedures puts this in capitals: NEVER USE A STRONGER CONCENTRATION. That is a claim about damage, not about thrift.
A hot empty wash cleans the machine

The problem is real and has been measured. Whether this fixes it has not been — the study that found the contamination tested no treatment at all.
Leaving the washing machine door open
Plausible mechanism, untested in this application
The one washing-machine habit with a mechanism that the measurement actually points at: the parts that drain were far cleaner than the parts that hold water.
Vinegar for mirrors and glass
Does not work
The glass industry's mirror division names vinegar explicitly among the things not to use. So does it name ammonia — which is what the shop-bought alternative contains.
Steam mopping a laminate floor
Does not work
The European laminate producers' technical bulletin has one categorical sentence and this is it: steam cleaners are not suitable for use with any type of laminate floor.
Freezing chewing gum off with ice
Unresolved
Universally recommended and absent from the trade body's own entry for gum, which says break up the solids and vacuum. Recorded as unassessed rather than wrong.
Never use an abrasive in the bathroom
Disputed
Right about the bath, the taps and the mirror. Wrong about the toilet and basin, where the manufacturer permits a soft abrasive outright.
Putting a cleaning block in the cistern
Does not work
The manufacturer's instruction is not that it works poorly. It is that it can damage the flush valve and other working parts.
Toothpaste as a metal polish
Does not work
A mild abrasive in a tube, and the tap manufacturer names it specifically among the things that must not be left on the finish.
Washing silk at home
Disputed
The professional body lists five specific ways it goes wrong. It also has an obvious commercial interest in saying so, and both facts belong in the answer.
Polishing brass and copper back to a shine
Disputed
Tarnish is the metal, not dirt on it. The conservation procedure's position is that copper alloys should usually not be polished at all.
Scraping glass clean with a razor blade
Does not work
The glass industry excludes blades and metal scrapers from routine cleaning outright, and the scratches may only become visible months later at the right sun angle.
Saddle soap and mink oil for leather
Does not work
The two products most associated with looking after leather are both on the trade body's prohibited list, and for the same reason: the finish changed.
Washing-up liquid on leather
Does not work
The gentle-sounding option. The leather trade lists soap and dish detergent among caustic household cleaners not to use on it.
Lifting candle wax with a warm iron and paper
Unresolved
The most repeated wax technique there is. The carpet trade's database does publish wax procedures — Sprint 30 found four — and not one of them names heat.
Letting mud dry before you touch it
Disputed
Sensible-sounding, and the carpet trade's own entry for mud recommends no drying-out period at all.
Using laundry detergent on a carpet stain
Does not work
Excluded outright by the carpet trade, and the reason it now gives is one nobody guesses: optical brighteners.
Cornstarch or talc to draw out a grease mark
Supported
A folk remedy that a trade body specifies as the FIRST step on suede, ahead of any solvent. One of the few household techniques the evidence supports.
Drying wool flat rather than hanging it
Supported
The wool body recommends flat drying without saying why. The reason usually given — that wet wool stretches under its own weight — is not in the source.
Using oven cleaner in a self-cleaning oven
Does not work
The manufacturer prohibits it outright, and gives a mechanism nobody expects: the residue is what damages the oven, and it does so on the next self-clean cycle.
Cloudy dishwasher glasses can be cleaned
Disputed
Sometimes they can, and sometimes the cloudiness is etching — which the manufacturer states is permanent. The two look identical and have opposite answers.
Running a vinegar cycle to clean a dishwasher
Supported
One of the few household remedies a manufacturer prints in its own manual — with a specific method, and citric acid named as the fallback.
You will smell it if the fumes are dangerous
Does not work
Two regulator fact sheets carry the same explicit warning against exactly this assumption, and the gas people worry about most smells pleasant.
All-purpose cleaner on a vinyl floor
Does not work
Named in the prohibition list by the flooring manufacturer, alongside steel wool and solvents — and so are the mops people use.
Baking soda paste for marks on painted walls
Supported
Suggested by the paint manufacturer itself for spot marks — with the qualification that the real risk on a wall is water, not the cleaner.
Decanting bleach into another container
Does not work
The regulator's sheet is about containment rather than surfaces, and it is specific: bleach should not be handled in equipment containing common metals, because the reaction can rupture the container.
Combining bleach and hydrogen peroxide
Does not work
Two oxidising bleaches, so the reasoning is that together they must whiten harder. The regulator lists them as incompatible with each other.
Cleaning the lint filter when it looks full
Does not work
The manufacturer specifies before every load, and prints it under a fire-hazard heading rather than under care and cleaning.
Alcohol cleaners are gentle, so they are safe
Disputed
Its health rating is 1 and its flammability rating is 3. The hazard people underrate is the one the regulator rates highest.
Lining hob drip pans with foil
Does not work
Saves cleaning, and the manufacturer forbids it with three consequences named: shock, fire or damage to the range.
The ammonia bag trick for baked-on grease
Supported
A classic internet trick that a manufacturer prints in its own manual — for one specific component, and with the same document banning ammonia elsewhere on the appliance.
Oven cleaner on the grill pan and grid
Disputed
One accessory, two parts, opposite instructions. The manufacturer permits oven cleaner on the pan and prohibits it on the grid.
Food spills on an appliance can wait until you clean
Does not work
For acidic spills the manufacturer says immediately, and names the consequence as discolouration rather than dirt.
The care label allows oxygen bleach even when it bans chlorine
Does not work
A widely assumed distinction. On the wool body's own symbol page there is one bleaching symbol, it means no bleaching at all, and no variant permitting oxygen bleach appears anywhere.
The dots on a care label are just a rough guide
Does not work
They are specific numbers. The standards body's table gives exact temperatures for every dot, and a bar under a symbol changes the process rather than the heat.
Fabric softener is fine on everything
Does not work
Two manufacturers exclude it outright, for the same reason in different words: it leaves a deposit, and the deposit is the problem.
Never put a waterproof jacket in the tumble dryer
Does not work
The manufacturer prescribes twenty minutes in the dryer AFTER the garment is already dry, because heat is what reactivates the repellent finish.
Washing cold prevents shrinking
Disputed
The trade body's mechanism puts most of the shrinkage in the DRYER, not the wash — and describes an end point beyond which a fabric stops shrinking at all.
A stain method that works on cotton works on anything
Does not work
The wool body warns against exactly this, and gives wool a sequencing rule cotton advice does not have: solvent first, allowed to evaporate, only then water.
Press harder to get the creases out
Does not work
Pressure is what makes wool go shiny, and the shine is a changed fibre surface rather than a mark that can be cleaned off.
Spraying disinfectant instead of cleaning
Does not work
Marketed as the thorough option, and it is — against organisms. On a dirty surface it can fail at both jobs at once, because soil shields the organisms it is meant to kill.
Microwaving a sponge to disinfect it

The method is documented precisely. The claim attached to it is not — the source that gives the minute declines to say it disinfects anything.
Dissolving a dishwasher tablet in an air fryer basket
Unresolved
A widely circulated shortcut for baked-on grease. The manufacturer prescribes two other things for exactly this problem, and a tablet is neither.
Bicarbonate of soda and vinegar down a drain
Unresolved
The fizz is the two ingredients reacting with each other, not with the blockage. What actually blocks a kitchen drain is fat, and nothing in this mixture deals with fat.
Pouring boiling water down a drain
Disputed
Two confident answers circulate and neither survives contact with the evidence. The pipe manufacturer's limit is about volume and duration, not kettles — and the grease comes back anyway.
Orange sunscreen marks are rust
Does not work
They contain iron and they are the colour of rust, and they are not rust. The iron comes from your water and the sunscreen grabs it — which changes what removes them.
Bleach ruins outdoor fabric
Does not work
On solution-dyed acrylic the manufacturer specifies bleach, at a stated ratio, for mildew. That permission comes from how the fibre was dyed and does not transfer to fabric that looks the same.
Spraying cleaner onto a screen or keyboard
Does not work
Every manufacturer instruction read here says the same thing: put the liquid on the cloth, never on the device. A spray goes where the nozzle points and also where it does not.
Rinsing paint brushes outside with a hose
Does not work
The instinct to take it outside is exactly backwards. A household sink goes to treatment; a storm drain and a garden do not.
Aluminium foil and bicarbonate of soda to clean silver
Disputed
The chemistry is real and it is the reason to be careful. Both conservation bodies read here rule out electrochemical cleaners, and on silver PLATE the stakes are highest.
Cream cleaners ruin uPVC
Disputed
The profile manufacturer permits a non-abrasive cream cleaner for stains soapy water will not shift. Sparingly - excess dulls the gloss - and never on woodgrain foils.
Blowing out a charging port with compressed air
Unresolved
The most recommended technique for the most asked question, and the phone manufacturer prohibits it by name while publishing no alternative.
Whitening yellowed ivory
Does not work
Every circulating method assumes the yellow is dirt. The conservation authority says it is the material ageing and that no attempt should be made to remove it.
Enzyme cleaners for pet urine

Investigated in Sprint 33 and left open. The enzyme mechanism this register can evidence is for PROTEIN, and the part of urine that keeps smelling is not protein.
