Boiling water poured into a drain holding a chemical product can splash it back out, and some drain products generate heat in water in their own right. Where anything has already been poured in, the drain's contents are unknown and adding boiling water is not a neutral act.

Why it works
The claimed mechanism is that heat lowers the viscosity of solidified fat enough for it to flow away. The first half is ordinary physical chemistry: heat does soften fat, which is why hot water genuinely helps with grease on a plate. The step that does not follow is 'away'. A plate is rinsed to a drain; a drain is rinsed to a longer, cooler pipe, and the fat re-solidifies once the water carrying it drops back below its melting range. The treatment relocates the deposit rather than removing it. The counter-claim's mechanism — thermal softening or distortion of the pipe — is real in principle but is a function of how much hot water arrives and for how long, which is what the manufacturer's note actually assesses.
Background
The internet holds two firm positions: that a kettle of boiling water is the first thing to try on a slow drain, and that it will warp your plastic pipes. Sprint 21 read a pipe manufacturer's own technical note, and it supports neither as stated. The number people quote is real: the recommended maximum CONTINUOUS operating temperature for PVC-U pipe is 60C, well under boiling. But the same note is explicit that intermittent discharge is a different question, assessed as a 60C average ACROSS THE PIPE WALL rather than as the temperature of the water touching it — and on that basis says short, small-volume discharges above the limit are generally satisfactory, citing thermal cycling at 88 to 95C without failure. That is not a clearance. The note covers PVC-U pipe and nothing else — not other pipe materials, and not the joints, traps and seals a real waste system is full of. The efficacy half is worse for the hack. Hot water does not eliminate fats, oils and grease: the fat melts, moves along, and solidifies again where the water has cooled — further from the plughole than where it started.
