Every per-stain procedure in the carpet trade's database opens the same way and it is not with a cleaner: blot liquids with a dry white cloth, gently scrape semi-solids with a rounded spoon, break up solids and vacuum. The reason is that a solution applied over a solid or particulate deposit does not remove it, it wets it and spreads it — turning a defined mark into a larger diffuse one and driving particles further into the structure. For a particulate soil like mud the dry step does most of the work outright, and the entry needs only a weak detergent afterwards. The leather guidance makes the same point for a different material and adds a restriction: cleaning begins with a suction vacuum, and a rotating brush vacuum must never be used, because the brush damages the surface. That generalises: suction lifts, agitation abrades, and on a napped or coated surface the second is not a stronger version of the first. Grit is the other reason — particles left behind are dragged across the surface by whatever cloth follows.

When the obvious answer is wrong
How do I get a grease mark off suede without ruining the nap?
Suede is the porous lower split of the hide with nap on both sides, dyed like aniline and uncoated. The trade guide states that cleaning agents will immediately darken nude leather — there is no cautious first application, because the first application is the result. Water is not a safe alternative either: the guide specifies deionised water because hard water containing minerals may cause rings. And the guide separately prohibits alcohol, strong solvents, high-pH cleaners and dish detergent on leather generally, as incompatible with modern finishes.
A different kind of treatment works: Change the mechanism from dissolving to absorbing. The trade guide's instruction is to place cornstarch directly over the affected area and rub gently with a finger until it coagulates with the oil, repeating as necessary. The powder offers a finer, drier pore network than the suede, so the oil moves upward into it and leaves with it — nothing is dissolved and nothing is carried deeper. Only if the mark is still evident after that is a cloth dampened with odourless mineral spirits used, and it is the last step rather than the first. Where water is unavoidable for a water-based soil, the guide specifies dampening rather than soaking a cloth and feathering the edges outward so no boundary forms, using deionised water so no mineral ring is left behind.
Can I use oven cleaner on the burnt-on mess in my self-cleaning oven?
The manufacturer prohibits it in absolute terms: no commercial oven cleaner or oven liner protective coating of any kind should be used in or around any part of the oven. The mechanism is delayed rather than immediate. RESIDUE FROM OVEN CLEANERS WILL DAMAGE THE INSIDE OF THE OVEN WHEN THE SELF-CLEAN CYCLE IS USED — so the harm happens later, at pyrolytic temperature, to whatever the cleaner left behind. Someone who sprays, wipes and sees nothing wrong has not shown the practice is safe; they have postponed the test. A different kind of treatment works: Use the mechanism the appliance already has. The manufacturer's own procedure is the self-clean cycle itself: remove the broiler pan, grid and other cookware first, wipe up excess spillage before starting, and afterwards wipe the white ash away with a damp cloth once the oven has cooled. Clean only the parts the guide lists. The door needs three different treatments and they must not be confused — the gasket is not cleaned at all, because it is essential to the seal and must not be rubbed, damaged or moved; the area outside the gasket may take a scouring pad; and the door exterior must not meet oven cleaners, cleansing powders or harsh abrasives. Where a spill is bad enough to want chemistry between cycles, the honest answer from this guidance is to wipe up spillage promptly instead, because the cycle is the cleaning method the oven was designed around.
Can I leave a cast iron pan to soak to get the burnt-on food off?
Cast iron is bare iron protected by a layer of polymerised oil, and that protection is defeated by water rather than by scrubbing. The manufacturer's wording is blunt: SOAKING CAST IRON IN WATER IS A RECIPE FOR RUST. It extends the same warning to cookware left in the sink to soak, put in the dishwasher, allowed to air dry, or left in a moisture-prone environment — and states that a dishwasher will remove the seasoning and likely cause rust. The failure is not the burnt food coming off. It is that the pan is left in prolonged contact with the one thing its finish exists to keep off it.
A different kind of treatment works: Substitute mechanical action for time, and then remove the water immediately. The manufacturer's routine is three steps: wash with warm soapy water, scrubbing with a stiff-bristled brush or a scrubbing pad; dry COMPLETELY with a paper towel or lint-free cloth; then add a thin layer of oil distributed over the entire surface. Note what is permitted, because it contradicts the folklore that grew up around this pan: soap is explicitly fine, on the stated ground that dish detergent today is no longer strong enough to remove seasoning, and it prevents build-up. Air drying is not an option — it is listed alongside soaking and the dishwasher as a way to get rust. Where rust has already formed, steel wool or a metal scrubber is acceptable to remove it, though not for daily cleanup. This damage is recoverable in a way most conflicts in this catalogue are not: a rusted pan can be scoured back and re-seasoned.
There is a greasy mark on my aniline leather sofa. Can I use a leather cleaner on it?
Aniline leather is not finished leather. The trade body describes it as porous and DYED rather than coated, and states plainly that cleaning agents will immediately darken nude leather. There is no surface film between the cleaner and the hide, so the liquid goes in rather than sitting on top, and the darkening is absorption into the leather rather than a residue that can be wiped back off. The prohibition list this catalogue carries for finished leather is about protecting a water-based FINISH; aniline has no finish to protect, which makes it more vulnerable rather than less.
A different kind of treatment works: Go dry, and go first. The trade body's own procedure for oil or grease on leather starts with cornstarch placed over the mark and rubbed gently with a finger until it coagulates with the oil, repeated as necessary — the absorbent lifts what it can before anything wet is introduced, and on a porous hide that is the only step that carries no darkening risk at all. Where the mark persists after that, the honest position is that this catalogue holds a solvent step for FINISHED leather and does not extend it to aniline, and that an unfinished dyed hide is the case the trade calls difficult. Treat a visible test in a hidden place as compulsory rather than advisable, and a valued piece as a job for a leather specialist.
