Mud is particulate: soil held in water rather than a dye bonded to a fibre or a fat spread through one. That changes the shape of the answer completely. The carpet trade's entry begins by breaking up solids and vacuuming, and then needs only a weak detergent solution and a rinse — no solvent, no vinegar, no ammonia. It is the shortest sequence in the database and the only one where the mechanical step does most of the work. Two details are worth stating because they contradict common advice. The entry recommends no drying-out period before starting; the widely repeated instruction to let mud dry completely and then vacuum it appears nowhere in it. And it offers a dry absorbent cleaning compound as a substitute, to minimise drying time — the opposite instinct from adding more water. The general caution matters more here than usual: rinse thoroughly, because detergent residue attracts soil, and a patch that resoils faster than the carpet around it is a rinsing failure rather than a recurrence.
