The explanation below is what is offered for this technique. CleaningHQ has not found evidence establishing that this is what actually happens, and says so rather than presenting a plausible story as a finding.
Wet mud is a suspension and smears when worked; dry mud is a friable solid that fragments and can be lifted by suction. The first half is sound and is why every procedure starts by removing solids mechanically. The claim's extra step — waiting — is not addressed by the trade guidance, which recommends the opposite of waiting and offers a way to shorten drying rather than extend it.

The advice is that wet mud smears and dried mud crumbles, so the patient move is to leave it, let it dry, and then vacuum the solids away. The carpet trade association's entry for mud does begin mechanically — break up solids and vacuum — but it recommends no drying period before starting, and it goes further in the other direction: it offers a dry absorbent cleaning compound as a substitute specifically to MINIMISE drying time. Its standing instruction across every entry is to act quickly, because delay may make a spill permanent. So the source both supports the mechanical first step the claim is built on and declines the waiting the claim adds to it. What is unresolved is whether waiting actively harms the result, and CleaningHQ will not supply that either way. There is a reason for caution: mud is not only particulate, it carries dissolved matter, and the drying step is exactly when a liquid front deposits what it was holding at its outer edge — the mechanism behind tidemarks.
