In detail

A drain is unlike every other cleaning problem here in three ways, and all three explain why its advice is so poor. You cannot see what you are treating, so you do not know whether the problem is a film of grease, a solid obstruction, or nothing in the pipe at all. You cannot reach it, so mechanical action — the variable that does most of the work elsewhere in cleaning — is unavailable, and whatever you pour in acts alone. And you often do not know what is already down there, which is exactly the situation in which adding a second product is least defensible. Two different faults get the same name. A SMELL from a plughole and a BLOCKAGE have different causes and different answers. Slow drainage in a kitchen is usually fats, oils and grease solidifying against the pipe wall as they cool, and extension guidance is blunt that hot water and soap do not deal with this because the fat re-forms further along. The intervention with evidence behind it is prevention: fat cooled and binned, and nothing down the toilet but human waste, wastewater and paper. Where a blockage has formed, sewerage undertakers direct householders to report it or call a contractor.

The article does not discuss mixing two drain cleaners, using a plunger after a chemical has been added, or what to do with a drain holding an unknown product. Those questions are therefore answered from the general never-mix position and the standing refusal in the mixing model, not attributed here. What it does newly support is the completely-blocked-drain splash case, which is exactly the situation a reader is in when they reach for a second product.
