Aluminium is amphoteric and is attacked by strong alkalis, which dissolve its protective oxide layer and then the metal, leaving a dull grey or blackened surface that is not a deposit and cannot be cleaned off. This is the same mechanism that darkens aluminium pans put through a dishwasher.

The explanation below is what is offered for this technique. CleaningHQ has not found evidence establishing that this is what actually happens, and says so rather than presenting a plausible story as a finding.

Dishwasher detergents are strongly alkaline and are formulated to saponify fats and lift carbonised food residue at temperature, usually with builders and enzymes alongside. Applied directly rather than diluted through a machine cycle, that chemistry meets the deposit at a far higher concentration than the formulation anticipates, which is a coherent reason to expect it to work. It is also the reason to expect the material restrictions that come with strong alkalis: aluminium is amphoteric and is attacked by them, painted and anodised finishes are damaged by them, and the solid tablet has an abrasive character of its own when rubbed on a surface. Some products in the category are also acidic rather than alkaline, which changes the answer entirely and is not distinguishable from the packaging.

A reader using a tablet as a general-purpose scouring block, on surfaces that may have had other products on them, is operating outside the enclosed machine those formulations were designed for.
