In detail

A cream cleanser suspends a fine, soft abrasive in a surfactant liquid, which is a genuinely different product from a scouring powder even though both are described as abrasive. The suspension keeps the particles apart and lubricated, the particle size is small and consistent, and the mineral used is soft — calcium carbonate is common. The stainless steel trade association recommends mild non-scratching creams specifically for stubborn spots, light discolouration, water marking and light rust staining, and in the same table warns against cleaning pastes carrying abrasive additions and against using abrasive scouring powder where it may scratch a polished surface. The distinction between those two instructions is the whole point of the category: the question is never whether a product is abrasive, but whether its abrasive is softer than the surface. On a directional finish the second rule still applies regardless — work along the grain, because a scratch pattern that runs across it cannot be blended out.

The single most contradicted instruction in consumer uPVC advice, and the manufacturer's own position is narrower than either camp.

When the obvious answer is wrong

How do I get rid of rust that keeps coming back on a chrome fitting?

Where the plating has been breached, the rust is not sitting on the surface — it is the steel underneath corroding and showing through. Removing what is visible does nothing to the corrosion producing it, and the treatments make the situation worse in two ways: an acid or chelant reaching bare substrate through a breach attacks it directly, and abrasion widens the breach that let moisture in. The mark returns, faster each time.

This is damage, not dirt — cleaning is the wrong approach: Establish which situation you are in before treating anything, because the two look similar and need opposite responses. Surface rust transferred onto intact plating — from a tin, a razor, or steel wool used nearby — is a cleaning problem and a mild non-scratching cream is the trade-recommended treatment. Rust emerging from beneath plating that is pitted, lifting or scratched through is corrosion of the base metal, and no cleaning method addresses it; the fitting needs re-plating or replacing. The tell is behaviour rather than appearance: if it returns in the same place within weeks of being removed, it is coming from underneath. Note also that rust spots on stainless steel are usually neither of these — they are particles of ordinary carbon steel shed by wire wool, corroding on a surface that is itself intact.

How do I get tarnish off silver-plated cutlery without wearing the plating through?

That sentence is also the problem. Tarnish CONTAINS silver, so removing it always removes a little metal, and abrasive polishes carry corrosive acids as well as abrasive compounds. On solid silver that is a slow recurring cost. On plate the silver is only microns thick, so the same treatment is a countdown - and the museum sheet records how it ends: over-polishing plated silver removes the plating and exposes dull base metal that CAN BE MISTAKEN FOR TARNISH. The reader then polishes harder, on the one area with nothing left.

A different kind of treatment works: Work out which you have first, because the answer diverges and hallmarks are how you tell. On plate, drop down the escalation rather than up it. Both conservation bodies read here direct a silver cleaning CLOTH as the routine treatment for light tarnish on plain undecorated pieces, and the museum sheet states that a cloth or a dip removes far less surface than a polishing cream does. For heavier tarnish the UK professional body permits a silver DIP, with conditions that are not optional: follow the container instructions, wear gloves, use fresh solution, and rinse thoroughly - dip left in crevices keeps corroding and produces a green crust. Electrochemical cleaners, including the aluminium-foil-and-bicarbonate method, are ruled out by both bodies as a class. The larger answer is to clean less.
