In detail
A water mark is the dissolved mineral content of the water itself, left as a thin film where a droplet evaporated in place. It is the same calcium and magnesium chemistry as limescale and differs only in scale and thickness — a fresh drying mark is a light film that a mild cream cleaner removes, while the same process repeated for months in the same spot builds adherent scale that needs an acid. This is why the useful advice about water marks is almost entirely about prevention rather than removal. The stainless steel trade association's instruction is to rinse with clean potable water and then dry, using an air blower or clean disposable wipes, and its reasoning is that the mark is created at the moment of evaporation rather than during the wash. Where marks have already formed, mild non-scratching creams are the recommended treatment, with an explicit warning against pastes carrying abrasive additions and against chloride-containing solutions. On glass and on polished stone the same deposit behaves differently: glass can be etched by prolonged mineral deposition in a way that no longer cleans off, and on carbonate stone the acid that would remove the film attacks the stone.
