Why it works

Toothpaste contains fine abrasives such as hydrated silica, suspended in a humectant paste, so it does cut a deposit mechanically and does leave metal brighter. The mechanism is real. What it ignores is the thickness of what it is cutting into: on a micron-scale plated or PVD coating, material removed is coating removed, and the improvement is borrowed from the finish's remaining life.

Background

Toothpaste appears in cleaning folklore because it genuinely is a mild abrasive paste, which is what it has to be to work on teeth. It is recommended for taps, chrome, headlights and jewellery on that basis. The manufacturer of plated bathroom fittings names it directly, in a short list of things that must not be allowed to remain on the surface alongside nail polish remover and caustic drain cleaner. The reason is what a modern tap is: not solid metal but a plated, physical-vapour-deposited or powder-coated finish a few microns thick, over which the same document's standing instruction is do not use abrasive cleaners. A polish that removes a micron of material is trivial on a solid brass fitting and a significant fraction of the coating on a contemporary one. The result is not an immediate scratch but a gradual dulling that cannot be restored, because there is no material left to re-polish. The same care sheet gives the alternative, and it addresses the actual problem: the marks on a tap are usually mineral deposits from water evaporating on metal, so blotting dry with a dabbing action prevents what the polish is being bought to remove.

  • Microfibre cloth Split synthetic fibres with a very large surface area, which lift and trap soil mechanically — often with water alone.
  • Neutral cleaner A near-neutral surfactant cleaner. The recommended answer for natural stone of every kind, and the least interesting product in the catalogue for good reasons.
