That leaving dilute bleach standing in a stainless steel sink for several hours or overnight whitens the sink, removes staining and disinfects the drain.

Standing bleach left in a sink or drain is the documented starting condition for domestic chlorine gas exposure, because whatever acidic product is used next reaches it. Two cases in a state health department hazard alert began exactly this way.

Why it works

The claim assumes bleach acts on sink staining the way it acts on a fabric stain, by oxidising the coloured material, and that longer contact means more of it. Two things are wrong with that. Most stainless sink discolouration is mineral film or embedded iron particles rather than an oxidisable organic stain, so the oxidising action has little to work on. And the chloride content of hypochlorite acts on the steel independently of the bleaching, attacking the passive layer at points where it is weakest — a process that has no natural endpoint and is driven by exactly the extended contact the technique is built around. The longer it is left, the more of the damage mechanism operates and the less of the intended one.

Background

The technique is to fill or part-fill a sink with dilute bleach and leave it — often overnight — to lift staining and freshen the drain. It fails on two independent counts, and the second is the serious one. Chemically, the problem is chloride rather than oxidation: chloride ions break down stainless steel's passive chromium oxide layer at localised points, producing pitting corrosion, and the variable that governs it is contact time. The trade association addresses this case by name, stating that soaking stainless sinks or cookware in dilute bleach solutions for long periods, overnight for instance, is not advisable, and that where hypochlorite is used at all the contact time must be minimal and the rinsing thorough. The safety problem is separate and worse. What to use instead

  • Mild cream cleanser A liquid carrying a fine soft abrasive. The trade answer for water marks and light staining on stainless steel — and not the same thing as scouring powder.
  • Detergent A surfactant-based cleaner. The general-purpose answer for greasy and particulate soil, and the correct first choice far more often than any specialist product.
  • Rinsing and drying The step people skip, and the one that decides whether cleaning protected the surface or damaged it. Residue left behind is exposure that continues after you stop.
