The deposit is the water's own mineral content, left as a thin film where a droplet evaporated in place. Because it is a surface film rather than a chemical bond to the stone, it can be lifted mechanically, and a very fine abrasive lifts it without cutting into the polish. The relative-hardness principle governs as it always does: 0000 is the finest commonly available grade, and the guidance specifies dry use, which keeps it burnishing rather than dragging. What makes this route valuable is not that it is gentler than acid but that it is a DIFFERENT MECHANISM — acid would remove the deposit by dissolving carbonate, and on carbonate stone that is exactly the problem.
