Squeegee

A rubber blade that removes water before it can evaporate. It is the difference between a clean window and a window with the map of its own drying on it.

A squeegee does not clean; it removes liquid in a controlled way, and on glass that is most of the job. Water marks are not dirt — they are the dissolved minerals left behind when a film of water evaporates in place, so anything that gets the water off the surface before it dries prevents them entirely. The glass industry's own cleaning procedure is a solution applied generously, agitation, then a squeegee, with attention to the edges where water collects and runs back. The same tool solves the commonest recurring bathroom problem: a shower screen squeegeed after each use accumulates neither limescale nor soap film, because both need evaporation to deposit. Two practical points. A blade with a nick in it leaves a line every stroke, and the blade is a consumable rather than part of the tool. And the squeegee is where grit does its damage on glass, because a hard particle trapped under the rubber is dragged the full width of the pane — the glass trade attributes scratching to trapped abrasive particles rather than to the cleaner, and specifies enough water to float them away.
