Granite is acid-proof, so vinegar is fine on it

The stone genuinely resists kitchen acids. The worktop is not only the stone, and the trade still does not recommend acidic cleaners on it.

Why it works

The claim's chemistry is correct as far as it goes. Silicate minerals do not react with dilute organic acids the way calcium carbonate does, so the etching mechanism that ruins marble is genuinely absent. What the reasoning omits is that the acid does not only meet the mineral. It meets whatever impregnating treatment is on the surface, which is an organic coating with its own tolerances; it meets whatever accessory minerals the particular rock contains, which for commercially-named granite may include carbonates; and it sits on a polished surface whose appearance depends on a finish rather than on bulk composition. A conclusion about the rock therefore does not transfer to the worktop, and the trade guidance reflects that by recommending against acids while recording the rock's resistance.

Background

This is the most defensible of the acid-on-stone claims, and it is still not a licence. Granite is a silicate and does not undergo the carbonate reaction that etches marble; the stone trade's own guidance records siliceous stone as generally resistant to most acids found in kitchen settings. The same guidance, in the same place, declines to recommend acidic cleaners on it. The gap between those two statements is where a reader gets into trouble, and it has three parts. Nearly every installed granite worktop carries an impregnating treatment, which the trade describes as a repellent rather than a sealer and which acids degrade regardless of the stone beneath. Stone sold commercially as granite is not a mineralogical designation and includes rocks containing carbonate minerals that behave more like marble. And the polished finish is a surface condition rather than a bulk property. The claim is about a mineral; the question is about an object.

What the recommendation adds is that an installed worktop carries a treatment the acid also reaches, that commercial stone naming does not reliably indicate mineralogy, and that neither of those is knowable from the counter's appearance. The unread six carry the whole preventive programme - coasters, trivets, non-treated dry mopping, slip-resistant mats, worn vacuum wheels, blot-don't-wipe - none of which the register held. They also answer a priority-1 row reading 'no route answers this yet': the authority's position on etch marks is that they are not a cleaning problem and need professional re-polishing. Two oddities are worth the record: dry 0000 steel wool is permitted on water rings, and efflorescence is removed dry because water makes it worse.
