Soaking a hairbrush to clean it

The commonest brush-cleaning method online, and the one the makers prohibit. What it damages is under the bristles and it fails weeks later.

What is claimed

That soaking a hairbrush in warm water, commonly with vinegar, bicarbonate of soda or shampoo added, is the way to clean it.

Refuted on the manufacturers' own prohibitions rather than on a contested result. Both bodies clear a shallow wash and both exclude immersion, so the disagreement with the popular method is about the SOAK specifically and not about washing a brush at all.

The maker's own instruction is not to submerge the brush and to keep the water away from the wood. Soaking is the treatment that instruction exists to prevent.

The proposed mechanism

The explanation below is what is offered for this technique. CleaningHQ has not found evidence establishing that this is what actually happens, and says so rather than presenting a plausible story as a finding.

Immersion softens and disperses the accumulated residue so it can be rinsed away, and the additive is said to cut grease or dissolve build-up. The softening is real. What the claim does not account for is that a hairbrush is an assembly of timber, a cushioned pad and adhesive, and immersion delivers water to all three — a place the residue never reached.

Background

The technique is to fill a basin with warm water — often with vinegar, bicarbonate or shampoo added — and leave the brush in it for anything from ten minutes to overnight, so the softened residue rinses away. The soak does work on the residue. The objection is to what else is in the water. A brush maker's instruction for its own brushes is to wash them 'ensuring that the water does not reach the wood' and not to submerge them; a dermatology body says the same about a different brush: submerging the head will EVENTUALLY dissolve the glue connecting it to the handle, so only the tips are rinsed. That word does the work. A soaked brush is fine that evening, which is why the practice survives — the damage arrives long enough afterwards that nobody connects it to the wash. What takes it is the timber swelling, the cushioned pad absorbing water it then holds for days, and the adhesive at the tuft holes softening until bristles shed. The additives are a separate question and a smaller one. Neither maker names vinegar or bicarbonate, and on a brush the residue is sebum — an oily soil that a surfactant handles and an acid does not.

What to use instead

  • Brush rake A comb for a brush. Its value is entirely in coming before the water, on a tool that must not be soaked.
  • Detergent A surfactant-based cleaner. The general-purpose answer for greasy and particulate soil, and the correct first choice far more often than any specialist product.
  • Dry soil removal Taking the loose material away before any liquid touches it. Skipped almost universally, and it is the step that decides whether the rest works.
