Using oven cleaner in a self-cleaning oven

The manufacturer prohibits it outright, and gives a mechanism nobody expects: the residue is what damages the oven, and it does so on the next self-clean cycle.

Why it works

Caustic oven cleaner saponifies baked-on fat, which is why it works on oven soil at all. The claim assumes the interaction ends when the surface is wiped. The manufacturer's account is that it does not: residue remains in a cavity that will later be raised to pyrolytic temperature, and the damage happens then, to the oven's interior finish, rather than at the moment of use.

Background

A self-cleaning oven still gets dirty between cycles, so reaching for a spray-on oven cleaner feels like ordinary maintenance. The manufacturer's guide forbids it in unusually absolute terms: no commercial oven cleaner or oven liner protective coating of any kind should be used in or around ANY part of the oven. The mechanism is what makes this worth publishing, because it is delayed and invisible. Residue from oven cleaners will damage the inside of the oven when the self-clean cycle is used — so the harm is not done when the cleaner is applied, it is done later, at pyrolytic temperatures, to whatever the cleaner left behind. Someone who sprays, wipes, and sees no damage has not established that the practice is safe; they have deferred the test. The same guide adds that any soap left on the liner causes additional stains when the oven is heated, which is the same effect in a milder form. Its own routine is the cycle itself, with the broiler pan, grid and other cookware removed first and excess spillage wiped up before starting, and the instruction to clean only the parts the guide lists.
