Why it works

Steam delivers heat and moisture together, softening soil and, in principle, reducing surface micro-organisms. The claim assumes the laminate wear layer is impervious, which it broadly is. What the assumption misses is that a laminate floor is not a continuous surface: it is boards, and the joints between them expose the wood-based core, which swells with moisture. Pressurised steam is specifically good at reaching places a damp cloth does not.

Background

Steam mops are sold on the promise of cleaning hard floors with heat alone and no detergent, and laminate is the commonest hard floor in European homes, so the pairing is almost inevitable. The industry's own technical bulletin refuses it in a single unqualified line: steam cleaners are not suitable for use with any type of laminate floor. There is no dilution of that statement anywhere in the document, and it is the only instruction in the bulletin that admits no product-specific exception. The mechanism is in the same bulletin two paragraphs earlier. Laminate is a decorative resin surface over a wood-based panel, and with higher humidity those panels tend to swell, as with all wood-based products. Steam is hot water delivered under pressure, which is the most efficient way to get moisture past a surface layer and into the joints between boards, where the exposed core edges are. The damage is dimensional rather than cosmetic, it appears at the joints, and it is not reversible by drying. The bulletin's own routine is the alternative: vacuum for loose dirt, then a well-wrung damp cloth with a laminate cleaner, and no film-forming polish on a melamine surface.

What to use instead

• Microfibre cloth — Split synthetic fibres with a very large surface area, which lift and trap soil mechanically — often with water alone.
• Detergent — A surfactant-based cleaner. The general-purpose answer for greasy and particulate soil, and the correct first choice far more often than any specialist product.
• Rinsing and drying — The step people skip, and the one that decides whether cleaning protected the surface or damaged it. Residue left behind is exposure that continues after you stop.
