The regulator's sheet is about containment rather than surfaces, and it is specific: bleach should not be handled in equipment containing common metals, because the reaction can rupture the container.

Why it works

Bleach is sold as a dilute solution and is handled routinely, so a different container looks like a matter of convenience. The sheet's objection is chemical rather than practical: hypochlorite reacts with common metals, the reaction releases oxygen, and a closed container that generates gas is a pressure vessel. The risk is to the container rather than to whatever is being cleaned.

Background

Bleach gets decanted constantly — into spray bottles, watering cans, buckets and whatever is to hand. The regulator's fact sheet addresses exactly this and its sentence is about containment rather than cleaning: sodium hypochlorite should not be handled in equipment or piping containing stainless steel, aluminium, carbon steel or other common metals, and the reaction may release oxygen gas and can cause container rupture. It separately names copper, nickel, cobalt and iron as incompatible metals, and hydrogen peroxide as an incompatible chemical. Two further storage instructions come from the same sheet and are routinely broken: keep it in tightly closed containers, and keep it away from LIGHT, because sodium hypochlorite decomposes. A clear spray bottle on a sunny windowsill is losing strength, which is a likelier explanation for bleach that seems to have stopped working than any of the usual ones. Note what this record does NOT say. It is not evidence that wiping a stainless sink with bleach corrodes it — that is a different question, addressed by a different source, at a different scope.

The domestic pitting claim for stainless steel rests instead on the stainless trade association's guidance about prolonged soaking, a separate fact from a separate source, and the two are deliberately not merged.
