The proposed mechanism
The explanation below is what is offered for this technique. CleaningHQ has not found evidence establishing that this is what actually happens, and says so rather than presenting a plausible story as a finding.
The proposed mechanism is that wood dries out and a polish replaces lost oils. Both halves are shaky. Timber gains and loses moisture with ambient humidity rather than losing oils, and a surface film cannot pass through a finish to reach the substrate anyway. Where the piece is genuinely unfinished or oil-finished, an appropriate oil does replenish the finish itself — which is conditioning of a coating, not feeding a material, and it is a different practice with a different product.
Background
Two things are wrong with this and the second is more serious than the first. The first is straightforward: a finished piece of furniture has a barrier between the polish and the timber — a lacquer, a varnish, a shellac or a cured oil — and a product applied to the outside of a sealed surface does not reach the wood at all. What it does is sit on the finish, adding gloss and, over time, building a film that attracts dust and can go cloudy. Timber's dimensional stability is governed by the humidity of the room rather than by anything applied to its surface. The second problem is what the polish leaves. Federal conservation guidance states that most commercial furniture polishes contain silicone, that it is difficult to remove once applied, and — the sentence that matters — that a residue can be present even when the finish is stripped to bare wood. It has migrated into the timber, and it only becomes apparent when a new finish is applied and produces the crater-like defects called fish eyes. So the practice does reach the wood after all, in the one way nobody intended. For most furniture, dusting is the maintenance and polishing is optional.
