Almost every question about cleaning wooden furniture is a question about its finish rather than its timber, and the finishes behave nothing alike: a modern lacquer is a film that tolerates a damp cloth, an oil finish sits inside the wood with nothing over it, and a traditional wax finish is soft enough that water marks it and heat softens it. The wood trade's governing instruction — use a cleaner made specifically for the finish — is the one rule that survives across all of them. The finding that makes this record worth reading is about the product most people reach for. A federal conservation leaflet states that the majority of commercial furniture polishes contain silicone, that it is found in almost all liquid and aerosol wax preparations, and that once applied it can be difficult to remove — then goes further: a silicone residue can be present even when the old finish is stripped down to the bare wood. The consequence surfaces years later, when a new finish is applied and small crater-like indentations called fish eyes appear. For a piece that might one day be restored, it is a decision made now with the evidence arriving decades later.
