What tends to go wrong
The green film outdoors, and NOT the same organism as the mould indoors. Where it grows is the diagnosis: shade, overhanging trees, or paving that does not drain.

Window frames are uPVC, coated aluminium, anodised aluminium or painted timber, and the finish decides the method in every case. A uPVC manufacturer's care guidance is clear that abrasive and solvent cleaners must not be used: the surface is a thin skin over the extrusion, and once it is dulled or scratched the roughened area holds dirt and greys faster than the rest — which is why a cream cleaner used to remove a mark leaves a permanently dirtier patch. Coated and anodised aluminium are governed by a standards document whose escalation starts at water alone and stops at a mild detergent, with strong solvents, abrasives and aggressive acid or alkaline cleaners excluded; on anodised finishes it names trisodium phosphate, phosphoric acid, hydrochloric acid, hydrofluoric acid and fluorides specifically. Two instructions apply to every frame material. Do not clean a hot, sun-heated surface, because reactions accelerate unevenly and streak the finish. And identify the finish first, because marks from mistreating an anodic coating may be permanent. The drainage slots at the bottom need clearing more often than the frame needs cleaning.

The demand batch recorded a consumer claim that cream cleaners ruin uPVC over time. The manufacturer's position is narrower and more useful: a NON-ABRASIVE cream cleaner is permitted for stains soapy water will not shift, sparingly, because excess affects the gloss — and is not permitted at all on woodgrain foils. The catalogue models the permission with its conditions rather than either the folk prohibition or a blanket clearance. Hardware being a dry-duster-and-no-water surface was not anticipated at all.
