In detail
A painted wall is a thin coating over an absorbent substrate, and what it will tolerate is a property of the paint's finish rather than of the wall. The distinction that matters is sheen. A gloss or satin finish has a denser, less porous surface that can be wiped and, within limits, cleaned with a mild detergent. A matt emulsion scatters light through a microscopically rough surface, and any localised rubbing flattens that roughness — so the cleaned patch becomes shinier than the wall around it and reads as a mark even though the dirt has gone. That burnishing is why so many attempts to clean a scuff off a matt wall end in repainting. The manufacturer's guidance for cleaning painted walls is therefore ordered around identifying the finish first, testing in an inconspicuous place, using the mildest cleaner that works, and washing the whole wall between natural breaks rather than one patch. Two specific hazards are worth naming. Melamine foam is a fine abrasive and will polish a matt finish locally. And any cleaner strong enough to shift a greasy kitchen film may also soften the paint, particularly if the wall was painted recently — emulsion continues to cure for weeks.
