The proposed mechanism

The explanation below is what is offered for this technique. CleaningHQ has not found evidence establishing that this is what actually happens, and says so rather than presenting a plausible story as a finding.

Heat melts the wax; the paper, being absorbent and in contact, wicks the liquid wax up by capillary action and holds it; lifting the paper removes what it has absorbed. Each step is physically real. The unexamined step is what happens to the wax that is NOT drawn upwards, which is free to move downwards and sideways into the material at the same time — capillary action does not have a preferred direction. There is also a second risk the mechanism does not address: the temperature that melts a wax is well above what many synthetic carpet fibres, and every synthetic upholstery fabric, tolerate.
