The explanation below is what is offered for this technique. CleaningHQ has not found evidence establishing that this is what actually happens, and says so rather than presenting a plausible story as a finding.
Hand washing in cool water with minimal agitation avoids the mechanical and thermal stresses of a machine cycle, which is why it is proposed as sufficient. What it does not address are the failure modes the professional body lists, which are properties of the fibre and its dyes in contact with water at all rather than consequences of temperature or agitation — dye bleeding, dimensional change and texture loss.
Background
Silk is a protein fibre and the internet is full of confident home-washing routines for it. The professional garment-care body's position is that silk generally responds best to professional drycleaning, and what makes its page useful is that it names failure modes rather than simply discouraging: washing silk at home can cause shrinkage, fading, dye bleeding, loss of shape, and a limp or rough texture. It is specific about colour, saying some silk dyes do not react well to water and that washing at home can cause colours to fade or run, especially where light and dark are combined in one garment. It also identifies a chemical attacker most people never consider: perspiration and antiperspirants contain chloride salts that can weaken silk fibres and cause colour changes, which means the damage often begins before any wash. The honest caveat is that a drycleaning association recommending drycleaning has an interest, and CleaningHQ states it rather than pretending otherwise. The failure modes it lists are specific and checkable, and the interest does not make them false. As always, the garment's own care label governs over any general statement about the fibre.

This reverses a Sprint 2 downgrade and corrects an attribution. The chlorine-versus-oxygen bleaching distinction, withdrawn in Sprint 2 because ISO 3758 could not be read, is restored and cited here.
