The proposed mechanism
The explanation below is what is offered for this technique. CleaningHQ has not found evidence establishing that this is what actually happens, and says so rather than presenting a plausible story as a finding.
Wood ash contributes two things at once. Its particles are a fine abrasive, softer than the glass-ceramic panel but hard enough to break up the baked carbon deposit, so the soot is removed mechanically rather than dissolved — which is necessary, because carbon is not soluble in anything available domestically. Separately, the alkali and alkaline-earth carbonates in ash form a mildly alkaline solution in water, and mild alkali acts on the condensed tars from wood smoke that bind the carbon to the glass. The abrasive half is well founded and is implicitly confirmed by the sources themselves, which warn about scratching from coarse remnants — a warning that would make no sense for a purely chemical treatment. The alkaline half is chemically coherent and has not been shown to be doing meaningful work, and CleaningHQ records it separately at plausible mechanism rather than folding it into the verdict.
Background
This is the method most stove owners are eventually told about by somebody who has had a stove longer, and it predates every commercial product sold for the job. A damp cloth or crumpled sheet of newspaper is dipped into cold ash from the appliance and used to work over the blackened glass, which is then wiped clean. Sprint 1 recorded it as practitioner practice with a sound mechanism and no institutional backing. That was wrong, and reading fixed it: HETAS, the UK body approving solid-fuel appliances, describes the technique explicitly and gives the cool-glass prerequisite and the ash-grit caution; Charnwood, a stove manufacturer, recommends it for its own appliances in almost the same words. What the technique still has never had is a formal comparative study, which is why it sits at supported rather than higher. The interesting wrinkle is that both of those sources also prohibit abrasive cleaners, in the same documents — see the conflict record, where the apparent contradiction turns out to be about what the word abrasive is doing.

- Mild abrasion — Removing a deposit with particles softer than the surface beneath it. Safe or ruinous depending entirely on relative hardness.
- Mild cream cleanser — A liquid carrying a fine soft abrasive. The trade answer for water marks and light staining on stainless steel — and not the same thing as scouring powder.
- Detergent — A surfactant-based cleaner. The general-purpose answer for greasy and particulate soil, and the correct first choice far more often than any specialist product.
