The explanation below is what is offered for this technique. CleaningHQ has not found evidence establishing that this is what actually happens, and says so rather than presenting a plausible story as a finding.
Foil is heat-resistant, cheap and disposable, so it looks like a sacrificial layer that solves the messiest part of a hob. What the reasoning omits is what sits underneath: foil is electrically conductive and the drip pan sits immediately above the element receptacle, which is why the manufacturer names shock alongside fire and damage.
Background
Foil in the drip pans is one of the most widely practised kitchen shortcuts there is: the pans are the greasiest part of a coil hob, and a foil liner can be lifted out and thrown away. The manufacturer forbids it and does not hedge — do not cover the drip pans with foil, because using foil so close to the receptacle could cause SHOCK, FIRE OR DAMAGE TO THE RANGE. The receptacle is the electrical socket the heating element plugs into, and it sits directly beneath the pan. The same page carries a second fire instruction that points the other way and is far less known: clean the area UNDER the drip pans often, because built-up soil, especially grease, may catch fire. So the grease the foil is meant to catch is a genuine hazard, and the foil is not the answer to it. What the manufacturer does prescribe for the pans themselves is unexpectedly domestic, and it is covered separately in this catalogue. The instruction also generalises within the same document: never cover the oven vent opening with aluminium foil or any other material, because it prevents the vent working properly.
