Why it works
The implicit mechanism is that surfaces in a room share a soiling profile — soap scum, limescale, body oils and biological growth — so one formulation aimed at that profile suits them all. The first half is true: the deposits really are common across the room. The second half does not follow, because a cleaning product acts on the surface as well as on the deposit, and the surfaces do not share a chemistry. Soap scum is a metal soap needing a surfactant; limescale is a carbonate needing an acid; and an acid destroys grout, stone and plating while a surfactant leaves the scale. The room's problem is not that no product is good enough. It is that the deposits and the substrates want opposite things.
Background
A bathroom is the densest concentration of incompatible materials in a house, and this is the belief the catalogue was built to correct. Within one arm's reach there is typically vitreous china, acrylic, enamelled steel or cast iron, a plated tap finish, glass, cement-based grout, silicone sealant and sometimes stone. The sanitaryware manufacturers' guidance divides them on abrasion alone: soft abrasive cleaners may be used on vitreous china, and abrasives are excluded from acrylic, enamelled cast iron and every plated tap finish. The glass trade excludes abrasives from a mirror absolutely and names vinegar and ammonia specifically among the cleaners not to use on one. The tile trade excludes acidic cleaners from cement-based grout. And any acidic limescale product is destructive to carbonate stone, which is what a marble or travertine surface is. No formulation satisfies all of those at once, so a product sold for the room is either mild enough to leave the limescale or aggressive enough to damage something. The second hazard is sequence: a bathroom is where a descaler and a bleach product are most likely to be used minutes apart.

- Shower — Four incompatible surfaces within arm's length of each other, permanently wet, and the two commonest deposits need opposite chemistry from the grout that joins them.
