Neutral cleaning is what the guidance recommends when it is not warning about something, and the agreement across trades is striking. The stone institute specifies a neutral cleaner, stone soap or mild washing-up detergent in warm water, not over-concentrated, rinsed thoroughly and dried. The aluminium standard escalates from water alone to a mild detergent and offers a rule of thumb — a detergent safe for bare hands should be safe for a coated finish. The wood-flooring association directs a pH-balanced cleaner made for the finish. The tile trade, the sanitaryware manufacturers and the appliance makers all land in the same place. That convergence is the single most useful fact in this catalogue for anybody who does not know what a surface is made of, because a neutral detergent is the one option that is unlikely to damage any of them. Two conditions make it work rather than merely be safe. Concentration matters in the wrong direction: more detergent leaves residue that attracts soil, which is why the carpet institute forbids stronger solutions outright. And the rinse and the dry are part of the method, not the tidying up afterwards.
