The wool body warns against exactly this, and gives wool a sequencing rule cotton advice does not have: solvent first, allowed to evaporate, only then water.

The proposed mechanism
The explanation below is what is offered for this technique. CleaningHQ has not found evidence establishing that this is what actually happens, and says so rather than presenting a plausible story as a finding.
Stains are chemically what they are regardless of what they land on, so the treatment appears to follow from the stain alone. What that omits is the substrate: the same agent meets a protein fibre, a regenerated cellulose with water-soluble sizing, or a synthetic, and the order and tolerance change even where the chemistry does not.

Stain advice circulates without a fabric attached, so a method learned on a cotton shirt gets used on a wool coat. The wool body addresses the transfer directly, warning that methods primarily aimed at garments made from cotton or synthetic fibres are not all suitable for wool. Its own procedure differs in a way that is easy to miss because it is about ORDER rather than agent: oily or greasy stains are best treated with SOLVENTS FIRST, which must be ALLOWED TO EVAPORATE before any water-based treatment is subsequently carried out. Neither half of that appears in the carpet trade's sequences, which apply solution to a cloth and proceed. The shared elements are real — scoop or blot excess quickly with white tissue, do not rub, work from edge to centre, and use a dilute detergent in TEPID water rather than hot. Viscose makes the same point from the other direction: the garment-care body instructs never attempting stain removal on rayon without pretesting the agent first, because of the fabric's extreme sensitivity. The safe generalisation is the technique, not the treatment.

What to use instead

- Wool detergent — A mild, near-neutral detergent without enzymes or bleach. What the wool industry body recommends, and what it recommends against is the more useful half.
- Solvent wiping — Dissolving an oily soil and letting the solvent evaporate. The answer where water would leave a mark or cause harm.
