Why it works
The assumed mechanism is ordinary: an oily film has built up from handling, so a degreasing agent should remove it. Skin oils do transfer, so the premise is not absurd. What it misses is that the film returns on a timescale and in a pattern that handling does not explain — worst on parts never touched, present on stored items, and progressive rather than steady. The conservation account explains all three, because migration is driven by time and temperature rather than by use.
