Polishing brass and copper back to a shine

Tarnish is the metal, not dirt on it. The conservation procedure's position is that copper alloys should usually not be polished at all.

Why it works

Proprietary polishes combine a mild abrasive with a chemically active medium, so they both cut the tarnish layer and reduce it chemically. They work, which is not in question. The part the claim omits is that the layer being removed is metal that reacted, so each cycle takes material, and on a cast or engraved surface it takes the shallowest detail first.

Background

Copper and brass darken because the surface reacts with air, moisture and handling, so the tarnish is a layer of the metal in a changed state rather than a deposit sitting on top of it. Removing it therefore removes metal, every time, and the federal conservation procedure draws the conclusion bluntly: copper alloy objects should usually not be polished, and where polishing is necessary the least abrasive approach is used, starting with a paste of precipitated calcium carbonate and denatured alcohol. Metal tools and commercial cleaners are excluded. It also separates two things domestic advice runs together — damage to the metal, including its patina, cannot be addressed by cleaning, so a mark that is corrosion or a scratch will not yield to more polishing, and continuing is how cast detail and engraving are gradually lost. None of this means a domestic pan must be left dark. It means the shine is spent metal and the trade-off is worth making deliberately rather than monthly. Two practical constraints travel with it: these objects are not to be submerged, and liquid must not penetrate rims, edges or hollow parts such as handles.
