Treating a sealed marble surface as acid-tolerant is the specific harm this record exists to prevent. Sealing addresses absorption; etching is chemical removal of the stone itself and proceeds regardless of any impregnating treatment.

Why it works
The claim assumes a sealer forms a continuous impermeable film over the stone, in the way a varnish does over wood. Impregnating stone treatments do not work that way: they penetrate the surface and line the pores so that liquids bead rather than wick, which slows absorption without closing the material. Two consequences follow directly. Absorption is delayed rather than prevented, so the protection is measured in the time available to wipe a spill up rather than in what the stone will tolerate indefinitely. And because the treatment addresses absorption specifically, it has no bearing on chemical attack — an acid reaching calcium carbonate reacts with it at the surface, which is not a process a pore-lining repellent has any means of interrupting.
Background
Impregnating treatments for natural stone are sold as sealers, and the word does most of the damage. A reader who believes a worktop is sealed reasonably concludes that nothing can get into it, and adjusts their behaviour accordingly: spills wait, oil is left, the surface is treated as a laminate. The Natural Stone Institute's consumer guidance corrects both halves of that. It states that these products do not actually seal the stone but more correctly act as a repellent, and that sealing does not make stone stain-proof — it makes it more resistant to staining. The second correction matters more than the first, because resistance is a matter of time: a repellent buys you the minutes in which a spill can still be wiped up, and buys nothing at all once those minutes have passed. Sealing also does nothing whatsoever about acid. An etch mark is the stone dissolving, not something soaking into it, and a sealed marble worktop etches exactly as readily as an unsealed one.
