The explanation below is what is offered for this technique. CleaningHQ has not found evidence establishing that this is what actually happens, and says so rather than presenting a plausible story as a finding.

Phosphoric acid dissolving calcium carbonate, the same reaction a commercial descaler uses. The acid is genuinely present and this register models what it does elsewhere. What no source read here supplies is its concentration in a beverage, whether that concentration is sufficient, or how a poured liquid achieves contact time on a vertical glazed surface and under a rim.

Background

The claim rests on a true premise: cola contains phosphoric acid, and phosphoric acid genuinely does the work in a great many commercial limescale removers and rust treatments. A regulator's own summary of what the substance is for lists detergents, foods and beverages in the same sentence. Three things stop that becoming a recommendation. No source read here establishes how much acid is in a soft drink, and a descaler is sold at a concentration chosen for the job rather than for drinking. A toilet's limescale is under the rim and below the waterline, where a poured liquid runs past rather than dwelling — and dwell is the variable acid descaling depends on. And the drink carries sugar, which is a residue that feeds soil after the acid has gone. What the register can say positively is what the same fixture's manufacturer permits, which is more useful than the hack: vitreous china is scratch- and abrasive-resistant, soft abrasive cleaners may be used on it where necessary, and toilet bowl cleaner belongs inside the bowl only with splashes wiped off anything plastic or plated.   • Mild cream cleanser A liquid carrying a fine soft abrasive. The trade answer for water marks and light staining on stainless steel — and not the same thing as scouring powder.
