Cooling an elastomer below its glass transition temperature makes it brittle rather than tacky, so it fractures instead of stretching and stringing. The physics is not in doubt. What is unevidenced here is whether a domestic ice cube achieves and holds that temperature through the thickness of the deposit, and whether the meltwater it produces creates a second problem in the pile.

Ask anyone how to get gum out of a carpet and the answer is ice. The carpet trade association publishes a per-stain procedure with a specific entry for chewing gum, and freezing, ice and chilling appear nowhere in it. Its sequence is to break up solids and vacuum, then apply a non-flammable spot removal solution or dry-cleaning type solvent to a cloth, with a dry absorbent cleaning compound offered as a substitute to reduce drying time.
