Oven cleaner for a stubborn worktop mark

Reaching for the strongest thing in the cupboard when a mark will not shift. On engineered quartz the manufacturer prohibits it outright.

Aluminium is amphoteric and is attacked by strong alkali, which is why aluminium components must be removed before caustic oven cleaning.

Why it works

Sodium hydroxide converts fats into soluble soaps, which is genuinely why oven cleaner clears polymerised oven soil that detergent cannot touch. The mechanism does not discriminate: the same hydrolysis acts on protein, on the oxide film protecting aluminium, and on the polymer resin binding an engineered stone surface. Effectiveness against the soil is therefore not evidence of safety on the substrate, and on this particular pairing the manufacturer has stated the answer.

Background

The logic is familiar: a mark resists ordinary cleaning, oven cleaner is the most powerful product in the house, so oven cleaner goes on the mark. What makes it dangerous is that oven cleaner is powerful in a specific direction. Its active constituent is sodium hydroxide, which works by saponifying fat, and a substance that hydrolyses fat also hydrolyses proteins, attacks amphoteric metals such as aluminium, and degrades polymers. The engineered quartz manufacturer names oven and grill cleaners first in its prohibited list and separately rules out chemicals of high pH. The hazard to the person is at least as serious as the hazard to the surface: the health authority's fact sheet describes sodium hydroxide as corrosive, causing severe skin and eye burns on contact, with eye exposure capable of permanent damage — and a worktop is a horizontal surface at chest height that people lean over, which is a materially worse geometry for splashes than the inside of an oven. Where a product does reach a surface it should not, the manufacturer's instruction is to rinse immediately with plenty of water.

What it does not do

What to use instead

  • Detergent A surfactant-based cleaner. The general-purpose answer for greasy and particulate soil, and the correct first choice far more often than any specialist product.
  • Mild cream cleanser A liquid carrying a fine soft abrasive. The trade answer for water marks and light staining on stainless steel — and not the same thing as scouring powder.
  • Soaking Extending contact time so chemistry can do work that would otherwise need force. Often the difference between scrubbing and wiping.
