In detail
A chain cleaning tool clamps around a bicycle chain and holds a reservoir of fluid and a set of rotating brushes; pedalling backwards runs the chain through it. It earns a record because it addresses the constraint that makes drivetrain cleaning risky rather than merely fiddly — solvent reaching the bearings either side. A bath that encloses the chain keeps the fluid on the chain, where a brush and an open bottle put it everywhere. The trade documentation uses it in a two-stage sequence: fill with solvent and run the chain through, then empty it, refill with soapy water and run the chain through again, because using a degreaser and then a soap is very effective at cleaning the chain and removing grit. Two things follow that are easy to miss. The tool contains the used solvent, so it can be disposed of properly rather than running onto a driveway and into a drain. And it does nothing for the cassette or the chainrings, which need a gear brush separately — with the wheel leaned so the cogs face the ground to keep solvent out of the hub bearing.
