The carpet institute's shared opening procedure names three actions before any solution appears, and the middle one is to gently scrape up semi-solids with a rounded spoon. A rounded plastic or wooden edge lifts a deposit off a surface without cutting into it, and the roundedness matters as much as the material — a sharp corner concentrates force at a point and gouges. The same logic runs through most of this catalogue. The glass trade states that razor blades and metal scrapers should not be part of routine cleaning and that metal contact with the glass surface is to be avoided at all. Non-stick coatings are damaged by any metal edge. Plated and painted surfaces show a scratch from a scraper long after the deposit is forgotten. Where a hard scraper genuinely is the right answer — a ceramic hob with fused sugar on it, for instance — the manufacturer normally supplies or specifies one and states the angle, and that instruction is doing real work rather than protecting a warranty. The general rule is to remove solids mechanically before wetting anything, with the softest edge that will actually shift them.
