Appliance door seals are flexible elastomer sections — oven gaskets, fridge and freezer seals, washing machine door boots — whose function is entirely geometric. They work by deforming to close a gap, and everything about their care follows from that rather than from their chemistry. The manufacturer position on an oven gasket is unusually blunt: do not clean, rub, damage or move it. That is not a warning about a product; it is an instruction not to touch the part. A gasket displaced from its channel or stretched by rubbing seals worse afterwards than it did dirty. The same maker's stainless steel procedure carries the other half of the boundary — when cleaning the exterior, avoid contact with plastic parts, trim pieces or rubber door gaskets. A clearance on the surface a seal is set into does not extend to the seal. Where a seal genuinely needs cleaning, as on a washing machine door boot that traps water and residue, the method is gentle and the frequent finding is that a perished, hardened or split seal is not dirty at all. That is a replacement, not a cleaning problem.
