In detail

Chocolate is fat, protein and pigment together, and the treatment reflects that: the carpet trade's entry runs solvent, then detergent, then vinegar, then warm water, then an ammonia solution — the longest sequence of any entry in its database. Each step addresses a different component, which is why shortening it leaves a shadow. The first action is mechanical and easy to skip: scrape semi-solids with a rounded spoon before any liquid, because a solution applied to a solid deposit spreads it. Two cautions run through the sequence. Solvent must never be poured onto the carpet or allowed to reach the backing, where it damages the latex bonding the two backings together, so it goes on the cloth. And ammonia, the last agent, carries its own warning: used improperly it can cause a colour change, so a hidden area must be tested first.
