Enzymatic products contain bacteria and enzymes, and work slowly by digesting organic matter. Non-enzymatic products are strong acids or strong alkalis — sulphuric and hydrochloric acid on one side, sodium and potassium hydroxide on the other — and work in minutes by destroying it. The two families look identical on a shelf and behave nothing alike. An alkaline product turns fat into soap; an acidic one attacks the blockage and the pipe together. Some products generate heat when mixed with water, which is part of how they act on grease and fat and also a hazard in a confined trap. The service names two avoidable ways domestic users get splashed: pouring from a height, and overpouring into a drain that is completely blocked so the product has nowhere to go. On ingestion it is blunt, and its instruction is to contact the poison centre rather than attempt a home remedy. Two products from opposite families poured into the same trap is the worst version of the mixing accident, because the reaction happens out of sight.
