A steam cleaner works by delivering hot water vapour to a surface, softening greasy and sugary soil and loosening what has bonded to a hard surface, with mechanical wiping doing the rest. The absence of a cleaning agent is its genuine attraction — nothing is left behind to attract soil — and heat plus moisture is exactly why it is prohibited on more surfaces than most tools. A contract furniture manufacturer's textile guidance carries a categorical instruction not to use steam on the fabrics it covers. Wood-floor and laminate guidance excludes it because moisture at the board joints swells the core and lifts the wear layer, and the damage is not reversible by drying. On a sealed or waxed finish the heat softens the finish itself. And where a surface is a coating rather than a solid — a printed vinyl, a lacquered metal, a foil-wrapped kitchen door — steam attacks the adhesive rather than the soil. Its claim to sanitise is a separate question from its claim to clean: any thermal effect depends on the surface reaching and holding a temperature for a period, which a moving head does not guarantee.
