Fungal spores are the reproductive units mould produces, and understanding them removes a great deal of confusion about what cleaning can achieve. They are normally present in the air and spread on air currents, they are produced in enormous quantities, and the conservation guidance describes them as often water-repellent and resistant to desiccation. A spore that lands on a surface does nothing until it obtains sufficient moisture AND nutrients to germinate; without moisture it lies dormant rather than dying. That is why every mould authority puts moisture control first and treatment second, and why a surface can be scrupulously clean and still develop growth if it is wet. The water-repellent property matters for cleaning specifically: a spore is not readily wetted by a passing damp cloth, which is part of why physical removal by suction and disposal outperforms wiping on a colonised surface. The nutrient half is where cleaning genuinely earns its place — growth accelerates with elevated temperature, poor air circulation, dim light and, named explicitly, accumulated dirt. Removing the dirt removes the food, which is a preventive effect rather than a curative one.
