House dust mites

Not a hygiene failure and not removable by cleaning alone. They live on shed skin in soft furnishings, and humidity governs them more than vacuuming does.

In detail

House dust mites are microscopic arachnids that live in soft furnishings and feed on the flakes of shed human skin that make up part of ordinary household dust — the conservation guidance's definition of dust names dust mites and dead skin in the same list, alongside textile fibres, pollen, combustion by-products, insect bodies and food particles. Two things follow that are widely misunderstood. Their presence is a property of a warm, humid, occupied home rather than of a dirty one, so framing them as a cleanliness failure misdirects the effort. And they cannot be removed by cleaning in the way a stain can, because the population is distributed through the depth of a mattress or an upholstered seat rather than sitting on its surface. What the evidence here supports is indirect. Vacuuming with adequate filtration removes surface dust and the skin scale that feeds them, and filtration matters because a poorly filtered machine returns fine particulate to the air. Humidity is the lever the sources return to throughout this section. CleaningHQ makes no health claim here.

What works

  • HEPA filter is effective against House dust mites Supported

It removes surface dust and the skin scale that feeds them. It does not reach a population living through the depth of a mattress.

National Park Service, US Department of the Interior · Government or regulator

Relied on for: That household dust is composed of loose surface soil, sawdust, pollen, combustion by-products, textile fibres, hairs, flakes of dead skin, dust mites, insect bodies and food particles. (states this directly)

Verification: a person has read the passage relied on.

Read on The sections headed What is Dust?, Why Dust? and Preventive Maintenance. Supports the claim as stated. Upgrades the dust record from a description to a composition, and supplies the attract-and-hold-moisture link that connects dust to the mould records.

  2. How To Wash Pillows At Home Like an Expert

Bed Advice UK — The National Bed Federation · Trade or professional body

Relied on for: That the bed trade publishes laundering and protection guidance for pillows and mattresses. (background and mechanism only)

Verification: a person has read the passage relied on.

Read on The washing instructions, the drying instructions, the frequency statement and the replacement statement. Supports the claim as stated. Covers can-i-wash-a-pillow, which had been partial since the memory-foam rule was recorded: the foam half was answered and feather, down and synthetic were not. The filling split is now sourced from a trade body rather than inferred, and the foam exclusion is corroborated independently.

  3. Conserve O Gram 1/6: Choosing a Museum Vacuum Cleaner

National Park Service, US Department of the Interior, 2003 · Government or regulator

Relied on for: That a HEPA filter must remove at least 99.97 per cent of particulates 0.3 microns or larger, and that regular water-filtration floor vacuums are less effective than dry filtration with HEPA. (states this directly)

Verification: a person has read the passage relied on.

Read on The sections headed Filtration System — Dry Vacuums, Wet Vacuums and Wet-Dry Vacuums, plus the physical-feature checklist. Supports the claim as stated. Gives the vacuum record a filtration standard and, more usefully, a ranked comparison between three machine types that consumer coverage treats as equivalent.
