Kitchen sponge microbiota
The most-studied surface in a domestic kitchen, and the honest finding is narrow: the published methods clean the sponge and are not claimed to eliminate what is in it.
In detail
A cellulose sponge holds moisture, food residue and warmth in an open structure, which is a growth medium rather than a tool that happens to get dirty. The extension guidance here gives three methods — microwaving it wet on high for one minute, with metal-containing sponges excluded; a one-minute soak in dilute bleach; or a complete dishwasher cycle on high heat — plus advice to clean it weekly and replace it when torn or discoloured. The limit is stated more clearly than the methods, and it is the part this catalogue carries hardest: the fact sheet does not claim that any of them eliminates bacteria. They are presented as good ways to CLEAN the sponge, with the modest conclusion that regular cleaning or replacement helps prevent spread. No reduction figure, no contact time beyond the minute, and no claim of disinfection. That restraint is the correct model for domestic microbiology. What decides risk in a kitchen is sequence rather than population: a sponge used on a raw-meat surface and then on a worktop has moved contamination, and no later treatment undoes the order it was used in.

CleaningHQ had expected a source of this kind to say that microwaving disinfects a sponge, because that is how the practice is described everywhere else. It does not. The catalogue therefore records the methods with the modest claim the source actually makes — cleaning, and helping prevent spread — and treats sponge disinfection as not established rather than as supported.

Three things are now sourced rather than asserted: that an oxygen bleach product, not the dial, is what prevents transfer between items in a cool wash; that soiling degrades the wash enough to reverse it; and that machines miss their set temperature by up to 14C. It still publishes NO frequency, so the towel and tea-towel rows stay partial for the same reason as before.
