Insoluble metal soaps
A metal ion meets a fatty acid and makes something that will not dissolve in water. It builds up invisibly, then oxidises — which is why some stains appear long after the event that caused them.
In detail
Soap works because its fatty-acid end can be carried away by water. Introduce certain metal ions and that stops being true: the fatty acid binds the metal, and the product is an insoluble salt — a metal soap — that water cannot lift. The evidenced case is antiperspirant. Aluminium salts interact with the urea, amino acids, proteins, fatty acids and sebum in perspiration, and the products deposit in the fabric as insoluble aluminium salts or soaps. Nothing is visible at this stage, which is the point. The colour arrives later, attributed at least in part to oxidation of unsaturated fatty acids held in those salts, and only once repeated wear and laundering have built up enough to oxidise. That time lag is what makes this worth a record. A stain whose cause was months ago does not behave like a spill, and escalating treatment afterwards addresses material already bound into the fibre. The intervention with the best claim is preventing accumulation — laundering more often, before there is a deposit to oxidise. The same chemistry is what people describe as soap scum in hard water.
