A spilled cleaning product is a different problem from a stain, and the carpet trade body treats it as one: the answer to an alkali is an acid, and to an acid an alkali. It is also the one place where following that rule can be dangerous.

Most stains are removed. A spilled cleaning chemical is NEUTRALISED first, and the carpet trade body's database shows the logic by putting opposite agents at the head of opposite entries. Spilled lye and oven cleaner — both strongly alkaline — lead with vinegar. Spilled acids and battery acid lead with water and then AMMONIA, which is alkaline. Spilled ammonia inverts again: water, then vinegar. The glossary says so outright, giving vinegar's purpose as lowering alkalinity from detergent or an alkaline spill. So the first question after a chemical spill is not what lifts the mark but what the product WAS. THERE IS A LIMIT HERE AND IT IS A SAFETY LIMIT, not a caveat. This is about a dilute residue in a carpet pile and does not license mixing products. Ammonia must never go onto a spill of unknown composition: if the product contains chlorine bleach, ammonia produces chloramine gas, and bleach with acid gives off chlorine. The trade body's own toilet-cleaner entry — the product most likely to be acidic or chlorine-based — does NOT reach for ammonia, and that omission fits the hazard. Where the product is unknown, the honest step is the one every entry ends with: call a professional.
